New Delhi: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has called for a new bill in Parliament to ensure the rapid trial and conviction of rapists. Following the shocking rape and murder of a doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, Banerjee demanded that sexual assault cases be resolved within seven days, with offenders facing either execution by hanging or encounter by law enforcement.

Banerjee's call for action

Speaking at an administrative meeting in Amtala, located in his Diamond Harbour constituency, Banerjee expressed his frustration with the BJP’s response to the tragedy. He urged the BJP to focus on pressing the Centre to introduce legislation for swift justice instead of staging protests. Banerjee assured that the Trinamool Congress would fully support such a bill if presented in Parliament.

Swift trials could save taxpayer money

Banerjee also pointed out the financial benefits of a quick trial process, noting that it would save taxpayer money. "These rapists, who don't deserve to live in society, should be dealt with either through encounter or by hanging," he stated firmly.

BJP criticizes TMC's stance

In response, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar accused Banerjee of trying to shift attention away from the state government’s failure to ensure the safety of women in public institutions. The tragic incident has raised serious concerns about security measures in hospitals.

The victim, a post-graduate medical student, was found dead in a seminar hall after being brutally assaulted. The autopsy revealed that she had been sexually assaulted before being murdered, with injuries to her neck and signs of severe violence. Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the crime.
