The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections, fielding Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal along with two sitting MPs Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta.

Maliwal’s nomination finalised

The name of 37-year-old Maliwal, an activist-turned-politician, was finalised during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to decide AAP's nominations for the January 19 Rajya Sabha polls from Delhi.

If elected, this would be Maliwal’s debut entry into parliamentary politics. She has headed DCW since 2015, spearheading several initiatives for women’s rights and safety.

Singh, Gupta renominated

Apart from Maliwal, AAP has renominated its existing Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term, even as Singh is currently lodged in jail under the alleged Delhi liquor scam.

The candidature of Sushil Kumar Gupta, another AAP Rajya Sabha member completing his tenure this month, was not renewed after he expressed his wish to focus on Haryana politics.
