A heart-wrenching incident took place in Ladakh’s Leh, where a vehicle carrying soldiers skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge on Saturday, killing nine and one was injured.

This incident occurred near Kiari in southern Ladakh’s Nyoma, said officials.

Briefing about the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Leh P D Nitya told news agency PTI that the vehicle in which 10 personnel were travelling, was on its way to Nyoma from Leh when the driver lost control and it plunged into a gorge at around 4.45 pm.

Further, the SSP added that a police team rushed to the spot immediately and shifted the injured soldiers to an Army medical facility where eight of them were declared dead. Another soldier died subsequently as he couldn’t survive the injuries, she said.

Political leaders extend condolences and grief

Amid this, several political leaders including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and others extended their grief and condolence to the deceased families on social media.

Taking it to X (formerly known as Twitter), President Murmu said, Deeply anguished to learn that a road accident in Leh led to the loss of lives of Indian Army personnel. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May God give them the strength to bear this tragedy. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. The nation owes a great debt of gratitude to these soldiers for their selfless sacrifice.”

“Pained by the mishap near Leh in which we have lost personnel of the Indian Army. Their rich service to the nation will always be remembered,” Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on X.

“Condolences to the bereaved families. May those who are injured recover at the earliest,” the post added.

Extending his grief on this saddening incident, Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi, “The news of the martyrdom of many of our soldiers due to the accident of an army vehicle in Ladakh is extremely sad. I pay my humble tribute to all the martyrs. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the Jawans. I hope for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

In a tweet on X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Saddened by the loss of Indian Army personnel due to an accident near Leh in Ladakh. We will never forget their exemplary service to our nation. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. The injured personnel have been rushed to the Field Hospital. Praying for their speedy recovery.”

Congress supremo Mallikaarjun Kharge wrote in Hindi, “The news of the martyrdom of 9 soldiers due to an accident of an army truck in Leh is very sad.”

“We will always be indebted to our brave soldiers,” he added.
