Taking a big stand against party defection, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tammineni Sitaram on Monday disqualified 8 MLAs.

Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy, Kotam Reddy Sridhar Reddy, and Undavalli Sridevi, following a petition filed by the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) are among the party leaders who have been disqualified.

The Speaker believed that the disqualified MLAs had abandoned their original parties in favor of other political organizations, undermining both the will of the voters and the democratic foundation.

In the context of politics, ‘party defection’ refers to the act of a party member defecting and allying with other parties.

The CMO announcement states that the disqualification judgment was made following a careful review of the claims and supporting documentation included in the YSRCP's petition against the named MLAs.

The disqualified members were charged with breaking party rules and participating in actions that went against the party's values.
In addition, a petition filed by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) resulted in the disqualification of Maddalagiri, Karanam Balaram, Vallabhaneni Vamsi, and Vasupalli Ganesh.

In its petition, the TDP alleges various misconducts and actions by the party members.

The disqualification represents a significant change in Andhra Pradesh politics because these rulings will affect the Assembly's power dynamics. It is also anticipated that this will spark conversations and debates regarding the implications and possible by-elections to fill the empty seats among the political community.
