The Pulwama attack was a suicide bombing that took place on 14 February 2019 in Pulwama, India, in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and injured many others. The responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The attack occurred on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway near Lethpora village in the Pulwama district. A convoy of CRPF vehicles was travelling from Jammu to Srinagar when a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden car rammed into one of the vehicles. The explosion caused a massive fire, destroying several vehicles and killing the occupants.

The attack was the deadliest on Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2016 Uri attack. It led to increased tensions between India and Pakistan, with both countries carrying out airstrikes on each other's territory.

The Indian government condemned the attack in the strongest terms and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Pakistani government condemned the attack as well, but also denied any involvement by the Pakistani state or its military.

The Pulwama attack has had a significant impact on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. It has also led to increased tensions between India and Pakistan. The long-term impact of the attack remains to be seen.

It is important to note that there are different perspectives on the Pulwama attack. Some people believe that it was a justified act of resistance against Indian occupation, while others believe that it was a senseless act of terrorism.

India's Response

Following the attack, India vowed to retaliate and granted its armed forces "full freedom" to choose the "timing, place, intensity and nature of the retaliation."

On February 26, 2019, twelve IAF Mirage 2000 fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and dropped bombs on what India claimed was a JeM training camp in Balakot, Pakistan.

India claimed to have eliminated a large number of JeM terrorists in the airstrike, while Pakistan denied any significant casualties or the presence of a training camp at the location.
