According to the officials, the targeted vehicles were transporting jawans from an area near Bufliaz, where an ongoing search operation against terrorists had been in progress since Wednesday night. The operation was focused on the general area of DKG (Dera ki Gali), Thanamandi in Rajouri.

This gunfighting occurred in the Savni area on the Rajouri-Thanamandi-Surankote road at around 3:45 pm. Reportedly, the terrorists opened fire on the convoy, which included a truck and a Gypsy.

Further, troops have been rushed to the encounter spot.

Which groups are responsible for this ambush?

The People's Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the ambush, as per the news agency PTI.

Citing defence PRO, the PTI said that a joint operation was launched last night based on ‘hard intelligence.’

The terrorist ambush in Rajouri district drew strong condemnation from two former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers - Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti.

The attack comes weeks after five Army personnel, including two captains, were killed in an encounter in the nearby Bajimaal forest.

What happened on Wednesday?

On Wednesday night, an explosion rocked the compound of an armed police unit in Poonch district as well. Windows of some vehicles parked inside were damaged in the blast at Surankote, officials stated.

The fresh incidents highlight persisting security threats in the border region despite recent steps to boost safety.
