At least 21 coaches of the North-East Express train derailed at Raghunathpur railway station in Bihar’s Buxar district on Wednesday killing at least 4 people. Nearly 100 people have also been injured so far. An official said that the incident took place around 9.35 p.m. The train started from the Anand Vihar Terminus in Delhi and was on its way to the Kamakhya near Guwahati Assam.

Two to three AC coaches have overturned and fallen on the track. Four persons reportedly died in the incident. “Some coaches of train number 12506 North East Express going from Anand Vihar Terminal to Kamakhya derailed at 21.35 today near Raghunathpur station of Danapur division,” ANI said quoting Railways official.

North-East Express train accident

The derailment affected train movement on the crucial Deen Dayal Upadhyay-Howrah route, which connects Patna, Jhajha, Kiul, Jasidih and Pataliputra.

The accident has caused the the disruption of both up and down tracks which has resulted in the diversion of several passenger and goods trains. According to CPRO, East Central Railway, Birendra Kumar the re-establishment of these tracks will take some time as “removing bogies is a cumbersome work.”

Reactions from Government

Union Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey said in an interview that he had spoken to the deputy general of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other officials along with Union Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He also added that the teams of the national and state disaster response forces have been deployed and have reached the scene of the incident.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejasvi spoke on the issue and said that he has spoken to the Disaster Management Department, Health Department, and the district officials of Buxar and Bhojpur to fasten the rescue process.

The office of the Assam Chief Minister, Hemanta Biswa Sarma also released a statement saying that they are “closely monitoring the unfortunate derailment” of the train in Raghunathpur. They also said that they are constantly in touch with the district authorities in Buxar and other agencies. Sharma also said that

“The Chief Minister’s Office is closely monitoring the unfortunate derailment of Train Number 12506 in Raghunathpur and is in touch with the district authorities in Buxar and other agencies,” Assam Chief Minister’s Office posted on X.
