New Delhi: At least 34 people have died after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu, while more than 60 people have been hospitalized. Officials have expressed concern that the death toll may increase. The police have started investigating the matter.

Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prashanth met the people undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in the district. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed grief over the deaths and said that action has been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it.

MK Stalin said that I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of the death of people due to drinking adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. In this case, the people involved in the crime have been arrested. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to stop it.
Stalin further said that if the public informs about the people involved in such crimes, action will be taken immediately. Such crimes that ruin the society will be strictly suppressed. At the same time, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi condoled the deaths and wished the victims a speedy recovery.
Governor RN Ravi said, 'I was shocked to know that many people lost their lives in Kallakurichi due to consumption of spurious liquor. Many others are struggling for their lives in critical condition. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and for the speedy recovery of those admitted in hospitals.
The Governor expressed concern over the frequent reports of deaths due to consumption of poisonous liquor from various parts of the state. He said that from time to time reports of deaths due to consumption of poisonous liquor come from various parts of our state. They reflect the persistent shortcomings in preventing the production and consumption of illicit liquor. This is a matter of serious concern.
