According to the police, Advaith (29) and Ajmal (29) both working at a private hospital in the district, died in the accident that occurred at around 12.30 am. Reportedly, they were returning to Kodungallur by using Google Maps to navigate. Mistaking the river to be a waterlogged road, they drove ahead and the car started to sink as both Advaith and Ajmal couldn’t come out while the other three came out injured.

The locals immediately rushed to the spot to rescue the trapped people and also informed the firefighters and police. Upon reaching the incident spot, the authorities also sent a scuba diving team to recover the bodies.

Three people were rescued from the car by the locals and rescuers. However, they were discharged from the hospital after getting immediate care.

Official statement

Speaking to the news agency PTI, the police said, “The visibility was very low at the time due to heavy rain. They were following a route shown by the Google map. But it seems like instead of taking a left turn as suggested by the maps, they mistakenly went forward and fell into the river.”
