The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commences on Monday, June 24, starting with the oath-taking ceremony for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The election for the Lok Sabha Speaker will follow on June 26. President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to address a joint session of both Houses on June 27.

This session marks the inaugural gathering of the Lok Sabha following the general elections held from April to June. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) currently holds a majority with 293 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 240 seats, slightly below the 272 majority mark required independently. The Opposition's INDIA bloc has secured 234 seats, with the Congress accounting for 99 of them.
On Monday, President Murmu administers the oath to Mahtab as the protem speaker of the Lok Sabha at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Following this, Mahtab will head to Parliament House and call the Lok Sabha to order at 11 am. The session will begin with a moment of silence to mark the first sitting of the 18th Lok Sabha. Subsequently, Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh will present the list of elected members to the House.
Protem Speaker Mahtab will then invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Leader of the Lok Sabha, to take the oath as a member of the House. After PM Modi, his Council of Ministers will also take the oath.
Mahtab will administer the oath to the panel of chairpersons appointed by the President to assist him until the election of the Speaker on June 26. These chairpersons include Kodikunnil Suresh (Congress), T R Baalu (DMK), Radha Mohan Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste (both BJP), and Sudip Bandyopadhyay (TMC).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the Lok Sabha on July 2 in response to the President’s address. He will speak in the Rajya Sabha the following day.
The Rajya Sabha's 264th session will take place from June 27 to July 3, 2024. Both Houses are expected to take a brief recess and reconvene on July 22 for the presentation of the Union Budget. Notably, there will be no Zero Hour or Question Hour during this period.
