New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken charge of the investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. The case, which has sent shockwaves across the nation, was transferred to the CBI following a petition by the victim’s parents to the Calcutta High Court.

In their plea, the parents revealed that the postmortem report indicated the presence of 150 mg of semen in their daughter’s body, strongly suggesting gang rape. The report also confirmed that the cause of death was strangulation, with clear signs of sexual assault. The petition further highlighted multiple injury marks on the victim’s body, including trauma to her head, injuries to both ears, and bite marks on her neck, all pointing to a violent struggle.

The parents's excruciating trouble

The parents expressed deep concern over the initial investigation, claiming that the state police arrested only one individual, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, while the evidence suggested the involvement of multiple perpetrators. They also criticized the hospital administration, particularly the former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, for failing to take immediate action after the doctor’s death. The court questioned why Dr. Ghosh was appointed to another medical college shortly after resigning from his post.

The CBI, now leading the investigation, has assembled a team of medical and forensic experts to re-examine the evidence. The team has been divided into three groups, each focusing on different aspects of the case, including visiting the crime scene, handling the accused, and coordinating with the Kolkata Police.
