A fire erupted in the inner sanctum of Ujjain's revered Mahakal Temple on Monday morning, resulting in injuries to 13 priests during the 'bhasma aarti' ritual. The incident occurred amidst the traditional ceremony, causing concern and prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

Confirming the occurrence, Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh announced that a comprehensive magisterial investigation has been launched to delve into the circumstances surrounding the fire incident. Eyewitnesses recounted that during the Holi festivities, 'gulal' was being sprinkled inside the sanctum sanctorum when an accidental spillage onto an earthen lamp possibly ignited the flames.

Among the injured is the chief priest of the Bhasma Aarti, Sanjay Guru, whose critical condition, along with eight others necessitated their referral to Indore for advanced medical care.

Ujjain superintendent of police Pradeep Sharma remarked on the probable cause of the fire, stating, "One of the injured informed that someone threw gulal on priest Sanjeev from behind while he was performing the aarti. The gulal fell on the lamp. It is believed that there was some chemical in the gulal that caused the fire."

In response, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav conveyed his sentiments, stating, "The incident of fire at the 'garbha griha' of Mahakal Temple during bhasma aarti is unfortunate. I have been in touch with the administration since morning. Everything is under control. I pray to Baba Mahakal for the quick recovery of all injured."
