10 dead in Meerut building collapse, rescue operations underway | WATCH

At least ten people lost their lives, and six others remain trapped following the collapse of a building in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, the district administration confirmed on Sunday. Rescue operations are being conducted amidst continuous rain by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

"According to family members, 15 individuals were inside the building at the time of the collapse. Three managed to escape, and eight of the remaining 12 have been rescued. Sadly, six have died. In total, 11 people have been pulled out, with four still believed to be trapped under the debris," said District Magistrate Deepak Meena. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate the remaining trapped individuals.

Incident details and response

The tragic incident occurred around 5:15 pm, prompting immediate alerting of emergency services. The building’s owner, Nafo Alauddin, operated a dairy business from the premises. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to expedite relief efforts and reach the site without delay.

Flooding adds to Uttar Pradesh’s woes

The collapse comes as Uttar Pradesh faces severe flooding, with 11 districts affected and 17 fatalities recorded. The Chief Minister’s office shared in a post on X that families of the deceased would receive ₹4 lakh in compensation. Additionally, relief has been extended to those impacted by the floods, including compensation for the loss of livestock and damage to over 3,000 homes.

Similar recent incident in Lucknow

This incident follows another building collapse in Lucknow last week, which claimed eight lives and injured 28. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial aid of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
