1 in 4 children suffering from hunger worldwide, India among 20 nations with severe food poverty: UNICEF

New Delhi: UNICEF has released a report on child poverty in which shocking revelations have been made. India is among the worst countries in the world, where children do not get proper diet. Pakistan is in a better situation than India. Talking about South Asian countries, Afghanistan is in a worse situation than India in child poverty. The report shows that every fourth child in the world is a victim of hunger and is struggling for a good diet. 65 percent of the 181 million children are forced to live in severe hunger. 

UNICEF shows 1 in 4 children falls in severe category 

UNICEF figures show that globally 1 in 4 children falls in the severe category and is living on a very poor diet. UNICEF conducted research on 92 countries in the 'Child Nutrition Report 2024'. UNICEF's report on child food poverty includes children up to 5 years of age. It is found out whether children are getting nutritious and varied diet or not? Severe child food poverty includes "poor food for children, poor environment and household income that affects children and their families". This report takes into account both families living in poverty and those living above it.

Where does India stand?

According to the report, the percentage of children living in severe child food poverty ranges from 1% in Belarus to 63% in Somalia. After Somalia, Guinea (54%), Guinea-Bissau (53%), Afghanistan (49%), Sierra Leone (47%), Ethiopia (46%) and Liberia (43%) are in the worst situation. In India, the figure of child poverty is 40%, which falls in the very serious category. Pakistan is in a better situation than India, where 38 percent of children are victims of hunger. The report has revealed that India is one of the 20 countries where children are not getting the necessary nutritious food. Along with India, Afghanistan and Pakistan are also in this category.

The report about India is also shocking because apart from 40 percent in the category of severe child food poverty, 36 percent children in India are in the grip of moderate child food poverty. According to this, the combined figure of both reaches 76 percent, which shows that India is the second worst country in South Asia after Afghanistan.
