About 1.3 lakh security personnel will be deployed in Delhi for the safety and security of the high-profile guest list attending the upcoming G20 Summit being hosted in the national capital next week.

As India prepares to host the Summit, as part of its year-long G20 presidency, Delhi will be on ‘high alert’ mode to ensure that the hosting goes smoothly.

“The preparations for G20 Summit are complete. Delhi is being beautified. The main routes, where the delegates can arrive, are being beautified. Trees and flower pots are being used. Doctors and hospitals have been kept on high-alert mode,” Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj told the news agency PTI earlier.

Schools and government offices in Delhi have been asked to remain closed from September 8 to 10. Banks, financial institutions, and commercial establishments in the New Delhi district will also remain closed during that period.

The Delhi Police have taken steps to ensure that no untoward incident happens during the event, and more than half of the police force will be used to provide security for the upcoming summit.

“The G20 summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on the 9th & 10th of September. This is the biggest event in independent Indian history. The Delhi Police has planned huge security arrangements for this event. These security arrangements cover various dimensions whether it be the security of airports, security of various venues of the events or the places of stay…There have been a number of security measures which have been put in place…” Special CP Madhup Kumar Tiwari told reporters on Friday.

“As far as security is concerned, we [Delhi Police] have made every arrangement to make sure that there is no infiltration or terror activity and sabotage.”

Tiwari also said that the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and the National Security Guard (NSG) will assist the Delhi Police in providing security during the summit.

“This is a historic and momentous moment,” Delhi’s Special CP (law and order) Dependra Pathak said.

The Pragati Maidan in the New Delhi district, where the G20 Summit will be hosted, will be guarded by a team of Delhi Police under the command of special commissioner Ranvir Singh Krishnia.

The Indian Air Force will “deploy comprehensive measures for integrated aerospace defence in the Delhi and close-by areas”, a spokesperson told the news agency Reuters.

The Armed Forces, including the Air Force, will join Delhi Police and paramilitary forces in deploying anti-drone systems to neutralise any aerial threats, the spokesperson said. Ahead of the summit, the North District Police have conducted drone surveillance in various parts of Delhi.

About 400 firefighters will be on call during the Summit. The government has leased 20 bullet-proof limousines, which cost about ₹18 crore, for carrying the dignitaries attending the summit. The left-hand driven bulletproof limos will be driven by a specially trained team of 450 drivers of the Central Reserve Police Force’s VIP security wing.

Security control rooms are being set up at the Pragati Maidan venue. Special security arrangements have been made for hotels where foreign dignitaries will stay, including the ITC Maurya Hotel, which will house US President Joe Biden.

“At the hotels, a DCP-rank officer will serve as camp commander. The rest of Delhi will be on high alert,” Special CP Madhup Tiwari said.

The spouses of the dignitaries will be guarded by specially trained security personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) paramilitary force. Many dignitaries are expected to bring their own vehicles and security. One government official told Reuters that India had no restrictions on the number of cars and personnel that dignitaries can bring, but had asked attendees to be ‘rational’ about the matter.

All borders around Delhi will be ‘sealed to prevent unwarranted entry’ into the national capital, officials said. However, normal traffic movement will continue as long as it complies with the travel advisories that have been published by the government in newspapers.
