Srinagar: People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti alleged on Saturday that she and her mother, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest. She claimed the gates of their residence were locked to prevent them from traveling to Sopore and Kathua. “My mother & I both have been placed under house arrest. Our gates have been locked up because she was meant to visit Sopore where Waseem Mir was shot dead by the army. I intended to visit Kathua today to meet Makhan Din’s family & am not being allowed to even move out. Nothing has changed in Kashmir even after the Iltija Mufti Alleges House Arrest Amid Kashmir Unrestelections. Now even comforting the families of victims is being criminalized,” Iltija posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Iltija revealed that she was scheduled to take a flight from Srinagar to Jammu to visit Kathua but was prevented from leaving her house in Khimber, located on the outskirts of Srinagar. “Our gate has been locked, and there is a contingent of security forces outside the house. I have been telling them I have a flight to catch at 11 am, but eventually, I will miss it as no one is listening,” she stated.
The alleged house arrest comes amid growing tensions following the shooting of a civilian truck driver on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway near Sopore. The Army claimed the driver ignored a checkpoint, leading to a high-speed chase spanning 23 kilometers. The soldiers reportedly fired at the truck’s tires to bring it to a stop, but the driver succumbed to his injuries. The incident has ignited outrage, with political leaders and the victim’s family disputing the Army’s version of events.
In another shocking development, a video recorded by 26-year-old Makhan Din from Jammu’s Kathua district went viral on social media, triggering strong political reactions. The footage, allegedly filmed inside a mosque in Billawar, detailed his alleged torture at the hands of the J&K Police. Holding a copy of the Quran on his head, Makhan Din claimed he was coerced into providing false statements under duress.
“I was assaulted. I told them honestly that I had never seen the militants or my uncle, Swaru, who crossed over to Pakistan. In the morning, they let me go to bring my mobile phone to the police station. I lied to them, saying I had Swaru’s number along with many others. If I take my phone to the police and tell them I don’t have those numbers, they will beat me again,” he said in the video.
His subsequent death, reportedly by suicide, has fueled further outrage, with political parties demanding an independent investigation into the alleged police brutality.
