SC collegium reform: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud addressed calls for reforming the Supreme Court's Collegium system and the process of designating advocates as seniors during a discussion with advocate Mathews J Nedumpara on Friday.

Responding to Nedumpara's suggestion for reform, CJI Chandrachud emphasised, "As a lawyer, you have the freedom to pursue your heart's desire. But as a judge, I am a servant of the law and the Constitution. I have to follow the position laid down by law."

Advocacy for Reform

Advocate Nedumpara urged the CJI to consider reforms to the Collegium system and the process of designating senior advocates. He expressed the view that while the CJI has initiated numerous reforms, addressing these aspects is crucial for elevating the judiciary to new heights.

Legal Challenges Filed

Nedumpara has filed separate pleas challenging the existing mechanism for selecting judges and the system of designating senior advocates. His pleas advocate for the abolition of the Collegium system for judicial appointments to the Supreme Court and High Courts.

The interaction underscores the ongoing discourse on judicial reforms, with advocates and legal experts actively engaging in discussions on enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the legal system.
