Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party intensified his attack on Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, describing him as "one of the most corrupt CMs in the country".

Gandhi is currently leading the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra from Manipur to Mumbai. Earlier in the day, Congress workers who were stopped from entering Guwahati city clashed with the Assam police.

Addressing a press conference, Gandhi stated, "There is a clear problem in Assam. The chief minister of this state is one of the most corrupt CMs in the country." He added, "What the Assam CM is doing against the yatra is actually helping the yatra. We are getting the publicity that we may not have got otherwise. The Bharat Jodo Yatra has become a main issue in Assam."

Gandhi claimed that preventing him from visiting the temple and college was the Assam government's "style". He said, "Intimidation tactics, we are not intimidated by them, we are not afraid of them."

In a social media post, Himanta Biswa said "Naxalite tactics" were alien to Assam's culture, adding, "These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such "Naxalite tactics" are completely alien to our culture."

Sarma stated he had instructed the DGP to register a case against Gandhi for "provoking the crowd" using footage from Congress' social media accounts as evidence.

Sarma criticized the Congress' "unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines," which he claimed had resulted in massive traffic jams in Guwahati.

Congress demands judicial inquiry into assaults on party members during Bharat Jodo Yatra

Debabrata Saikia, the leader of the opposition in the Assam legislative assembly, has called on Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to order a judicial inquiry into the physical assault on state Congress president Bhupen Bora. He is also urging an investigation into the unruly behavior of alleged BJP members during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

On Sunday, supporters of the ruling BJP party forcefully stopped the vehicle carrying senior AICC leader Jairam Ramesh. They verbally abused him and tore the stickers off his car. This occurred during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
