Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted with extreme concern at the devastating series of strong earthquakes that hit Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, resulting in widespread devastation, including the toppling of a high-rise building still under construction in Bangkok.
Sharing on X, PM Modi said in a tweet, "Deeply concerned with the situation after the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Wishing for the well-being and safety of all. India is prepared to provide any kind of support. To this effect, requested our authorities to remain standby. Also requested the MEA to stay in touch with Myanmar and Thailand governments."
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake, whose epicentre was in Myanmar, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, which shook buildings throughout the region. In Bangkok, a 30-storey building under construction collapsed, and several buildings in Myanmar's Mandalay also suffered heavy damage. Both governments have initiated emergency response measures.

The earthquake-stricken areas comprised Bangkok's venue, which will be hosting next week's BIMSTEC summit, where PM Modi and other regional leaders will be present.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called an emergency meeting in reaction to the calamity to gauge the situation and organize relief work.BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) members are India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.On PM Modi's forthcoming visit to Thailand, secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar announced, "PM Modi will go to Thailand to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit and on an official visit to Thailand from the 3rd to the 4th of April. This would be the third visit of the Prime Minister to Thailand.
India and Thailand have traditionally warm bilateral ties, shared civilizational, cultural and religious ties. Thailand is India's maritime neighbour, a precious partner in our act east policy and vision for the Indo-Pacific and also a greatly valued partner in BIMSTEC. The Prime Minister would have bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This would be his second meeting with the Thai Prime Minister. He had previously met her on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane on the 11th of October last year." At next month's Bangkok summit, leaders will be discussing efforts to deepen regional engagement and speed up collaborative efforts.
