The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday dismissed reports suggesting restrictions on booking e-tickets due to different surnames, labelling them as “false and misleading.” A spokesperson for the ministry clarified that any individual with an IRCTC account can book e-tickets for others, regardless of surnames.
Responding to claims circulating on the microblogging site X, which alleged that IRCTC account holders could not book tickets for individuals with different surnames, the ministry's spokesperson stated, “The news in circulation on social media about restriction in the booking of e-tickets due to different surname is false and misleading.”

The spokesperson further explained that tickets are booked on the IRCTC website in accordance with Railway Board guidelines, and detailed information regarding these guidelines is available to the public.
"According to Indian Railways, users can book tickets through their personal User ID on IRCTC for friends, family, and relatives," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also highlighted that up to 12 tickets per month can be booked from an individual account. Additionally, if the account holder is Aadhar-authenticated, they can book up to 24 tickets per month, provided at least one of the travellers on each ticket is also Aadhar-authenticated.
“Tickets booked on personal user IDs are not meant for commercial sale and such an act is an offence under section 143 of Railways Act, 1989,” the spokesperson added, emphasising the legal ramifications of misusing the booking system for commercial purposes.
This official statement aims to clear up any confusion and reassure users about the flexibility and legality of booking e-tickets through the IRCTC platform.
