'Black day for democracy': Opposition slams Modi government

Government defends bill as 'momentous moment' or India

Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has come to the defense of the bill, saying that it seeks to introduce transparency in the management of Waqf properties and benefit crores of Muslims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also welcomed the passage of the bill as a "momentous moment" for India's journey towards socio-economic justice and inclusive growth.

Congress to challenge bill in Supreme court

The Congress party has said that it plans to move the Supreme Court against the validity of the bill, with party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi declaring that the bill is not constitutional and can be invalidated by the courts.

Security tightened in Delhi amid protests

Security has been tightened in weak spots of southeast Delhi, such as educational hubs like Jamia Nagar and Jamia Millia Islamia, to avoid derailing law and order.
