The political landscape of Uttar Pradesh witnessed a turn on Sunday as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Agra, just days after the announcement of a crucial seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing the gathering, Yadav emphasized the critical challenge facing the nation. He said, "The coming days present a monumental task - to safeguard our democracy and Constitution, to salvage the dreams of Dr. BR Ambedkar that lie shattered under the BJP's rule. It's time to say 'BJP hatao, desh bachao' (Remove BJP, save the country)!"

The yatra entered Agrra from the Aligarh division via Amroha, Sambhal, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Hathras.

Priyanka Gandhi targets BJP

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had joined the yatra in Aligarh. She criticized BJP's decade-long reign, highlighting issues of rampant youth unemployment, ongoing farmer protests, and the ever-escalating inflation plaguing the common man.

"BJP has been in power for 10 years. There are no jobs for the youth, farmers are still sitting on roads, and inflation is a burden for the people of the country," Vadra said.

Rahul Gandhi, too, added his voice to the matter of concern, pointing out that the poor in India are constantly subjected to injustice under the Modi government.

The joint appearance by Yadav and Gandhi reminded memories of a similar scene that unfolded in Agra seven years ago. Back then, the two leaders had led a 12-kilometer roadshow in the Taj city, ahead of the 2017 UP assembly elections.

Notably, the yatra currently traverses through four parliamentary seats – Aligarh, Hathras (reserved), Agra (reserved), and Fatehpur Sikri – all of which are currently held by the BJP.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, launched on January 14 in Manipur, is scheduled to culminate in Mumbai on March 20. The ambitious yatra of Rahul Gandhi aims to mobilize support against the BJP and reconnect with the masses across the nation.

What is the current seat-sharing formula between SP and Congress?

Meanwhile, as per the recently announced seat-sharing agreement, the SP will contest 63 seats and the Congress will field candidates in 17 out of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

This strategic move by the two parties signifies a significant shift in the political landscape of the state. By ceding crucial seats like Rae Bareli, Amethi, and Varanasi to the Congress – constituencies with deep symbolic significance – Yadav has demonstrated a willingness to put aside past differences and forge a united front against the ruling party.

These seats hold immense weight as Varanasi is Prime Minister Modi's constituency, Amethi was Rahul Gandhi's until 2019, and Rae Bareli was held by Sonia Gandhi until she moved to the Rajya Sabha. This is considered to be a key move to forge an impeccable team against BJP.

Who held majority in Lok Sabha elections 2019?

In the 2019 polls, the BJP emerged victorious in 62 seats, while the SP-BSP alliance managed to secure only five. This stark contrast emphasizes the need for a consolidated effort to counter the BJP's dominance in the state. The SP-Congress alliance, solidified by the Yatra and the seat-sharing agreement, represents a significant step towards achieving this goal.
