'A disgrace to Bengal': BJP labels Mamata Banerjee amid Oxford speech protests

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was met with protests by agitators at Oxford University's Kellogg College in London yesterday. The agitators asked her about the RG Kar College incident and post-poll violence in West Bengal. A video posted by Bharatiya Janata Party's Amit Malviya allegedly depicted members of the Bengali Hindus community facing off with the chief minister when she visited Kellogg College in London.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was met with protests by agitators at Oxford University's Kellogg College in London yesterday. The agitators asked her about the RG Kar College incident and post-poll violence in West Bengal. Protests erupt at Kellogg college

"Bengali Hindus confront West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kellogg College in London, raising angry slogans against her for the rape and murder of the lady doctor at RG Kar, women's crimes at Sandeshkhali, Hindu genocide, and general corruption," Amit Malviya tweeted on X. The BJP leader also termed Mamata Banerjee as a "disgrace" to West Bengal. "Only a few placards that were waved in front of Mamata Banerjee. She is an embarrassment to West Bengal. The Hindu Bengali diaspora does not want her to remain as Chief Minister for ruining Bengal's heritage and subjecting them to such humiliation," he said.

BJP leader Amit Malviya weighs in

The video captured the West Bengal chief minister facing several interruptions, with one audience member voicing concerns about the state of Hindus in Bengal. "I am for everyone, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians," Banerjee replied, followed by "Go back" slogans from a part of the audience. The chief minister spoke to one of the protesters as "brother" and said, "Please remember this. and don't play politics. It's very easy to play politics here and give negative stories."

Banerjee's response to protesters

In a video clip uploaded by the Trinamool Congress of the exchange, the chief minister spoke to the protestors in these words: "You encourage me, Please smile with a hope that Didi will come every time, Didi don't get bothered, Didi don't bother anybody, Didi walk just like a Royal Bengal Tiger and if you can catch me me." Sharing the video, Trinamool Congress tweeted, "She (Mamata Banerjee) doesn't blink. She doesn't waver. The louder you boo, the more thunderous she growls. Mamata Banerjee is a Royal Bengal Tiger!"

SFI-UK claims responsibility for protests

In a statement the Students Federation of India in the UK (SFI UK) accepted responsibility for the protests say, "SFI-UK organized a demonstration in Kellogg College, Oxford against Mamata Banerjee's speech. We countered her naked lies by demanding evidence of the social development she claims to lead. Rather than let us peacefully voice our views, the police were summoned. In solidarity with the students and working people of West Bengal, SFI-UK spoke out against Mamata Banerjee and the TMC's corrupt, undemocratic regime."

Banerjee's disagreement with India's economic forecast

BJP chief Amit Malviya posted another video clip from Mamata Banerjee's session at Kellogg College, University of Oxford. In the clip, she was seen engaged in a discussion on 'Social Development - Girl, Child and Women Empowerment in West Bengal'. Here, she showed disagreement with the forecast that India would be the world's number one economy by 2060. "India has already surpassed the UK; we are now the 6th largest economy, and India is the fifth largest economy. Soon, it will be the third largest economy in the world. In 2060, it is forecast that it will be the first economy in the world," the host of the debate stated, upon which Mamata Banerjee replied, "I will differ that."

Amit Malviya's tweet revealed that the West Bengal chief minister seems to be upset with India becoming the world's largest economy.
"West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has an issue with India becoming the world's largest economy. This is absolutely shameful. She is an embarrassment to the constitutional position she occupies. Who acts like this abroad?" Malviya tweeted on X.
