Work of manual drilling to rescue the 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel continued on Tuesday morning, 17 days after the under-construction tunnel collapsed is continuing and experts are hoping for some good news by the end of today.
As per the latest update, pipe has been inserted up to 55.3 metres.
Micro Tunnelling expert Chris Cooper said this morning that 3 metres of manual drilling has been done so far and that a total of 50 metres of drilling work has been completed so far. The team his hopeful of completing this today, he added.
As per official sources, about 57 metres of drilling work from the mouth of the tunnel, is to be done in total to lay a pipe inside the tunnel to reach the trapped workers.
Rat-hole miners are carrying out the manual drilling work which has been going on since Monday night.

Earlier the rescuers had completed about 47 metres of drilling work using the auger machine to lay the pipe. The drilling work was put on hold as the auger machine got stuck in the debris, which was later cut and removed using a plasma cutter.

While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, Member, NDMA said, "We are near a breakthrough but not yet there. Manual work has carried on and we have reached 58 metres. The debris had been cut and the work was going on the entire night. Our rat miners, experts and Army engineers have been able to take it to 58 metres and the pipe has been pushed with the help of the auger machine..."

Due to the rescue operation, a temporary medical facility has been expanded inside the tunnel. After evacuating the trapped workers, health training will be done at this place. In case of any problem, 8 beds are arranged by the health department and a team of doctors and experts are deployed.

While addressing media, MD of NHIDCL informed that both horizontal and verticle drilling in ongoing. Work is ongoing, we have not stopped any of our various options. As far as horizontal drilling through the debris is concerned, the one being done inside the tunnel is complete up to 55.3 metres. We are doing this through manual excavation.
