The World Health Organization (WHO) initially created World Malaria Day in 2007, which also serves as the adoption date of the WHO’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030.
The World Health Organization urged the nations affected by the disease to speed the spread of high-impact tools and strategies to prevent, detect, and treat malaria, by making sure that no one is left behind.
According to data made public by union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s 85.36 percent disease-related death rate has decreased between 2015 and 2022. Dr Poonam Khetrepal, regional director of WHO-SEARO, Dr Manik Saha, chief minister of Tripura, Dr R. Lalthamgliana, member of the NITI Aayog responsible for health, and Dr V. K. Paul were all in attendance when Mandaviya spoke virtually at the Asia Pacific Leaders’ Conclave on Malaria Elimination.
India with the help of various Govt strategic interventions & innovative solutions has taken giant strides towards its target of eliminating Malaria by 2030.

The world is not on track to achieve the two important objectives of the WHO Global Technical Strategy (GTS) for malaria 2016-2030: reducing global case incidence and mortality by 90 percent or more by 2030, based on 2015 levels, according to Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia.
Dr Singh further stated that in 2021, an estimated 619,000 people globally died of malaria compared to 625,000 in 2020. There were an estimated 247 million new cases of malaria, compared to 245 million in 2020.
She further added that by the end of 2020, the South-East Asia Region was the only WHO region to achieve a 40 per cent reduction in malaria case as compared to 2015.
Also, amid the Covid-19 response, the Maldives and Sri Lanka have maintained their malaria-free status and five countries of the regions Bhutan, DPR Korea, Nepal Thailand and Timor Leste are among 25 countries and one territory globally identified as having the potential to eliminate malaria by 2025, she stated.
According to WHO, the theme will focus on implementation and notably the critical importance of reaching marginalised populations with the tools and strategies that are available today.
The official website of WHO says, “World Malaria Day 2023 will be marked under the theme “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement”. Within this theme, WHO will focus on the third “i” – implement – and notably the critical importance of reaching marginalized populations with the tools and strategies that are available today.

Malaria is preventable and curable
Symptoms of Malaria include Fever, Chills, Weakness, and other flu-like symptoms.
WHO also confirms that there is a new rapid test kit also available to detect malaria. They also claim that the test gives immediate results and is easy to use.
However, the WHO says that the disease is curable, but in some cases, malaria is potentially life-threatening. this is caused by parasites (plasmodium vivax, plasmodium falciparum, plasmodium malaria and plasmodium ovale) that are transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. the disease is relatively common in tropical areas. Children are more suspectable due to their weak immune systems.
However, over time, there are so many vaccines that are developed for the treatment and which help in recovering the weaker immune system.
The World Malaria Report which was shared by the World Health Organisation in 2022, claims that India has accounted for about 83 percent of all all-malaria deaths in the region.
Mosquitoes generally transmit the infection bite between dusk and dawn. One can wear long-sleeved clothes, and staying indoors can also help. One can also use mosquito repellent to expose the skin.
Keep the surroundings clean, and don’t let the water stay anywhere.
