World Environmental Health Day 2023 is celebrated every year on September 26 to mark a day dedicated to creating awareness about the impact of environmental health on human lives. This day highlights the correlation that exists between humans and their environment.

The environment we live in shapes the kind of life we’ll be leading as well as our physical and mental well-being. If we are exposed to a healthy environment, our quality of life will also improve greatly as compared to living in a poor environment. Environmental health which is an extension of Public health aims to to foster healthy and hygienic communities, which help to make the environment better.

Theme of World Environmental Health Day

Every year a theme is prepared for World Environmental Health Day. This year the theme is “Global Environmental Public Health: Standing up to protect everyone’s Health each and every day”. This year’s theme attempts to emphasise the collective responsibility to safeguard the health of every individual by addressing global environmental challenges consistently.

World Environmental Health Day History

The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) declared September 26 as the World Environmental Health Day in 2011. The IFEH has been working towards the improvement of health issues that threaten to kill human beings and are the reason for their suffering for the last three decades. The key reason for celebrating this day is to create awareness and promote a healthy environment for living beings.

In the present times, we are exposed to numerous health and environmental issues due to the severe climate crisis at hand. Due to the careless attitude of humans towards nature, we are facing environmental pollution and global warming. Rising sea levels, melting of glaciers and many other environmental disasters.

Significance of this day

World Environmental Health Day is celebrated on September 26 to promote awareness about our environment every year. The IFEH wrote on their official website “Environmental health is one of the largest fields within public health because of the myriad ways external forces can impact how people eat, live, and grow. These forces can be about addressing our natural environment (as in the case of clean water or sanitation), but they can also be the consequence of human beings’ actions.”

On this day several conferences and seminars are held in various universities and colleges to promote awareness among the younger generation about the need to address environmental concerns and prevent them. Many events are created to engage audiences in acts such as environmental preservation initiatives and health camps. This teaches children the significance of environmental concerns as they relate to public health.

Conclusion

This day aims to understand the inseparable link between humans and the environment, health, and economy while emphasising on how vital this understanding is for our coexistence. It highlights on the importance of investing in a sustainable and green recovery that benefits all communities and restores balance in our ecosyste
