In a recent draft the Road Transport Ministry has mentioned their proposal of adding two new safety features, to add up to the passenger and vehicle safety of both electric and diesel coach buses in India. Also it will be mandatory for manufacturers to get bus body certification from govt recognised testing agencies from the mid 2025.

This draft also has a proposal of adding indirect vision devices over and above the rear view mirrors, which will eventually help the bus drivers to avoid accidents and also be much safer for the passer-by.

What is the use of these ADAS-like features?

The whole point of this draft proposal is to increase the safety of these huge vehicles as well as to provide the passengers a much better and a safer journey, Indirect vision cameras will help to cover the vehicles behind them or at the blind spots, this kind of setup can be compared to Level 1 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) safety systems that we usually see in modern cars such as the Blind Spot Detection systems.

This step will make the buses, passengers and passer-by on the roads much more safer. However, the certifications will be mandatory but installing these ‘indirect vision’ devices will be voluntary for the bus operators.
