Problem of low blood pressure in summer? Know symptoms and take necessary precautions

The most basic mechanism of our body to maintain body temperature during scorching is to sweat and when that happens in excessive amounts, it leads to dehydration, sweating also created a deficit of electrolytes, including sodium in the body causing low blood pressure. When its hot, blood pressure expand so that more blood flows through which also helps in radiating heat, this process is called vasolidation which leads to a temporary dip in blood pressure levels.

What are the symptoms? 

The most visible symptoms are dehydration, tingling in your lips, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, fainting, nausea, blurred vision.

How can you avoid dehydration?

  • To avoid the situation of low blood pressure in the future, the first and foremost thing is to stay hydrated. Our body is made up of 70 percent of water and every organ to cell in the body requires water to function smoothly.
  • Consume at least 3-4 litres of water everyday. During such harsh summers, one must try to avoid going out during the day and if necessary, carry water with you and cover yourself to get into direct contact with the sun.
  • Wear loose, breathable and light coloured clothes to radiate heat.
  • When one eats on a regular basis, the body shunts blood away from the extremities of the body and into your stomach to aid in digestion. The more often one consumes the meal, the more blood gets sent that direction.
  • Try to add proteins, fruits and vegetables in your diet for the season.
  • Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol which push down the blood pressure levels.
  • In this extreme weather, one can add electrolytes in the water and some extra salts as well upon consultation with a  doctor.
