In a surprising move from Air India, the iconic saree uniform of the female cabin crew is likely to be changed after 60 years. In the last six decades, female flight attendants of the airline have served its passengers while wearing the whole nine years in every journey of every flight. In this new move by the airline company, this historic attire will most likely move on to more modern and contemporary attire, as per media reports.

The crew’s wardrobe will most likely be revealed in November this year and will have lead Indian designer Manish Malhotra as the mastermind behind the new uniforms, sources suggest. The designer has however, refrained from making any comments on this development due to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) as per an Air India spokesperson who declined to comment on the matter.

According to media reports, the new look might not completely do away with the traditional saree attire but will have the ready-to-wear sarees, designed to resemble traditional ones without requiring intricate draping.

Iconic saree of Air India attendedts

The flight attendants of Air India used to wear a skirt, jacket and a hat till 1962. The late JRD Tata was the first one to come up with the idea to make the uniform as sport sarees and the first sarees were sourced from Binny Mills, formerly known as Buckingham and Carnatic Mills Company.

According to media reports, the colour scheme of the new uniform will be the same as the airline’s new colour, having shades of deep red, aubergine, and gold.

The new shades of Air India flights will be shown on the A350 aircraft which will make its first debut in October, announced by the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, Campbell Wilson on August 10.

Moreover, Vistara, which has recently merged with Air India is likely to wear the new uniforms as well after doing away with the regular Violet two piece outfit of the airline, reports suggest.
