India is one of the five countries that produce millets. Therefore, millets become a powerful means of boosting India's economy. There are several states in India where millets are grown. States such as Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Over the past few years, millets have experienced a steady rise in their export demand and thus profit.  In the years 2021 to 2022 millet exports witnessed a steady rise, reaching an all-time high of US$ 62.95 million. This figure gradually increased to US$ 75.46 million from 2022 to 2023.

The main export destinations of millets are Europe and North America in the past. However, current major importers include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal. Other potential markets are identified as Kenya and Pakistan. Generally emerging economies who are seeking healthy and gluten-free options are also importers.

The main identified challenge is limited value-added products from millet. Also, the government is working towards pushing for the processing and branding of millet-based products. They aim to capitalize on the growing global demand.
Still, India's millet export scene is promising, which is reflected in the positive growth with potential for further expansion.
