World Heart Day was first founded in the year 1999 by the World Heart Federation (WHF) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). The idea to dedicate a day annually to the heart and its healthy lifestyle was conceived by Antoni Bayés de Luna, the president of WHF from 1997-2011.
According to the World Heart Federation, “World Heart Day informs people around the globe that CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death claiming 18.6 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.”
On the celebration of World Heart Day 2023, let us now look at some of the important habits that we can incorporate into our daily lives to lead a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy heart.
1. Regular exercise
It is very important that one engages in some exercise on a daily basis. Exercising for even 30 minutes a day can help improve our heart health. Physical activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling are great exercise options. Excess weight can strain the heart, so aim to achieve and maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise.
2. Balanced diet
One must have meals that provide good nutrition to the body. A diet rich in in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats should be consumed every day to maintain a healthy heart. Saturated fat, sodium and sugar should be limited.
3. Controlled portions
Food portions should also be kept in mind while eating. Overeating should be avoided since smaller, balanced meals can help regulate blood sugar and prevent weight gain.
4. Good hydration
To have a healthy lifestyle and good heart health, hydration is crucial to the body. A well hydrate body helps maintain healthy blood flow and prevent dehydration, which can strain the heart. Smoking damages blood vessels and increases the risk of heart disease.
5. Say no to smoking
Smoking is very injurious to one’s health and also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. If one quits smoking or avoids secondhand smoking then it can significantly improve heart health.
6. Managing stress
Healthy stress management also helps to keep the heart fit. Activities such as relaxation techniques, exercising, yoga, meditation or engaging in hobbies, can positively impact heart health.
7. Good sleep schedule
A bad sleeping schedule harms an individual’s health in multiple ways. Adequate sleep of 7-9 hours per night helps reduce the risk of heart diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and heart attack.
8. Reduced alcohol intake
If one drinks alcohol, it should be done in moderation as excessive consumption of alcohol leads to increased blood pressure irregular heartbeats, and even heart failure. Moderate consumption of alcohol should be followed.
9. Managing cholesterol
Cholesterol levels of one’s body should be regularly checked since it has the possibility of affecting the heart adversely. A regular cholesterol check-up should be done and if necessary, make dietary changes or take prescribed medications to manage cholesterol.
10. Regular health checkups
Everyone should go for a regular health check and proper monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall heart health with routine check-ups helps to identify and manage any potential risk factors.
These are a few measures that can help an individual maintain a good and healthy heart life. However, it is very important that one consults an expert or a healthcare professional for personalised advice and guidance.
