The term “nurse” derives from the historical profession of wet nurses, who breastfed children on behalf of others. When some mothers were forced to give up their children or work to support their families, this practice developed. Although the nursing profession no longer revolves around breastfeeding, its core values of nurturing and caring for the vulnerable continue. Theme and history of International Nurses Day 2023Modern nurses work with doctors, physiotherapists, and psychologists to help patients recover, breaking away from their historical role. Every year on May 12, the entire world celebrates International Nurses Day. The topic of the 2023 International Nurses Day has been announced by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) as “Our Nurses. Our Future.” This theme emphasises the ICNs and the global nursing communitys goals for addressing major global health issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICN seeks to raise the profile of nurses roles among healthcare policymakers in order to develop effective collaboration and improve global health outcomes. Since 1965, the International Council of Nurses has celebrated International Nurses Day on May 12, aligning with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, widely considered the founder of modern nursing. — Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) May 12, 2023Every year, the ICN creates and distributes tools and evidence-based information to help nurses and the general public. These resources include a campaign poster with the theme, a social media toolkit, a detailed evidence report, and a Charter for Change outlining ten principles that governments and employers should implement to create and sustain accessible, affordable, responsive, and safe healthcare systems. Nurses are at the forefront of healthcare services around the world, and International Nurses Day honours their life-saving work and sacrifices, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the day acts as a remembrance of Florence Nightingales humane treatment of injured and dying troops during the Crimean War.
