Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have emerged as the frontrunners in the NITI Aayog Health Index, which evaluates the performance of states in the health sector; the recently released list is of the challenging Covid year. Kerala, in particular, has achieved remarkable success in securing a high rank on the health index for the year 2020-21 as the top performer. Meanwhile, Tripura has outperformed other smaller states, claiming a commendable position. In contrast, Delhi has been placed at the bottom among all Union Territories with the worst performance.

Since its inception in 2017, the NITI Aayog has been diligently producing an annual Health Index that meticulously evaluates the health performance of states and union territories. The index considers 24 crucial factors to calculate an overall score. Notably, the World Bank has joined hands with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to provide technical assistance for the comprehensive report.

Although the Health Index Report for the fifth year, covering 2020-21, was scheduled for release by December 2022, it has not yet been made public. However, it has been revealed that the NITI Aayog has shared the findings with the Health Ministry, assuring that the study will be disclosed to the public in due course.

The health index incorporates parameters that measure the overall performance and growth of states and union territories on a yearly basis. It categorises them into large states, small states, and union territories, based on which their rankings are determined.

Among the eight smaller states, Tripura has emerged as the top performer, demonstrating commendable progress. Sikkim and Goa closely follow, securing the second and third positions, respectively. Occupying the subsequent ranks are Arunachal Pradesh (ranked 6th), Nagaland (ranked 7th), and Manipur (ranked 8th). In terms of Union Territories, Lakshadweep has claimed the highest position, while Delhi occupies the last spot.
