Ganesh Chaturthi, a major Hindu festival is just about here. While this festival is celebrated across the country with fervour and enthusiasm, the celebrations in Maharashtra are worth witnessing. Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav. This marks the birth of Lord Ganesha and this year it will be starting from September 19 while the Visarjan will take place on September 28.

Ganpati Bappa, who is the son of Lord Shiv and Parvati, is worshipped on this auspicious day. His clay idols are placed either at home or publicly on Pandals. Modak and laddus are offered to Ganesha to have his blessings on their families.

What involves in the Ganesh Chaturthi Puja?

Like any other puja, Ganesh Chaturthi also involves a lot of preparations beforehand. So, if you are planning to bring Ganesha home, make sure to avoid these few things:

  • Prior to taking home the Ganesha idols, make sure to clean your home and take a bath. It is mandatory to welcome Ganpati Bappa with shankh, bells, and a lot of flowers as it will help in bringing positive energy and happiness to your home.
  • When the Ganesha idol is brought home, it is necessary that the family members should not leave the house unoccupied. One family member should always be there with lord Ganesha’s idol.
  • Follow the Shubh Muharat mentioned by Pandits and according to custom, devotees may bring a Ganesha idol home for 1, 3, 7, or 10 days.
  • Avoid having onion, garlic during these 10 days as it is considered tasmic foods. Have only satvic foods.
  • When you are buying your Ganesha idol, make sure that your Bappa is sitting in a right position. And most important you must ensure that his companion mouse and a few ‘modaks’ are included with the idol.
  • Never immerse Lord Ganesha idol in a river or water without performing aarti and puja.
  • At last, make sure to consider an eco-friendly Ganesh idol as it is made up of natural clay or biodegradable elements. It will be very good for you and the environment as they can easily be dissolved in water.
