Protein powders are one of the most popular dietary supplements used by athletes, recreationally active adults, and soldiers striving to increase muscle mass, improve exercise recovery, and improve performance. But do they really help a person in the right way? Research uncovers something else.

In one of the recent observational analyses, it is found that the majority of the protein powders sold and consumed in India, give out wrong information, falter on quality, and gives false advertising claims.

According to the sources, the results were based on the research carried out on 36 popular brands of protein powders - including the brands with herbal and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals, and other natural ingredients, was published in the journal Medicine.

Results of the study

According to the survey, over 70% of the 36 supplements contained false information of protein, with some companies only providing half of what they advertised.

Furthermore, 8% of the samples contained pesticide residual traces, while 14% of the samples contained dangerous fungus aflatoxins.

The authors of the study, a US technology entrepreneur and clinical experts connected to Kerala's Rajagiri Hospital, criticized the low quality of the herbal protein supplements manufactured in India. The experts suggested for the scrutiny of the protein-based dietary supplement industry and asked to follow the basic regulations and safety study.

What is whey protein and why is it important?

Whey protein which roughly contains 35-80% of protein apart from lactose, fat and minerals from milk, is quite popular among fitness freaks as a dietary supplement. Whey protein is a liquid that separates from milk during the cheese-making process, filtered, refined and then dried to protein powder which has high nutritional value.

This not only helps the athletes to gain muscles but also helps them to recover from exercise and obtain more strength after the training routine.

While protein powders have several health benefits, experts have raised concerns about safety issues as well. According to the National Institutes of Health, experts caution about the high consumption of protein powders. Too much of consumption can lead to digestive issues, allergy, constipation, nutritional deficiency, and can also damage your kidneys and liver as well.
