Communication that works is essential for happy partnerships. It is what keeps communication and comprehension alive. Nevertheless, despite our best efforts, certain communication blunders may damage the foundation we have established with our loved ones. Couples that have trouble communicating frequently have ongoing, unresolved conflict, which makes it challenging to handle matters like finances, intimate relationships, parenting, and work.

In every relationship, successful communication between the partners looks different, but there are certain fundamental rules to follow. Along with the fundamentals, there are several relationships mistakes you should be aware of.

Don’t play blame game:

Sometimes we blame others for what we go through. One should avoid using ‘you make feel this…’ it might trigger their defensiveness. The argument may disturb and activate the bad feelings inside you. But the truth is that they are not creating. A person himself/herself is responsible for his/her feelings.

Make you communication clear:

Our spouses cannot read our minds. It is a trap that will lead to suffering to believe that they should ‘just know’ what you want or need. Say what you want if it is specific. Assumptions and hazy expectations are preferable than clear communication.

Talking and listening to each other:

It is ok to have disagreements in relationships. The thing most matters is how you talk and listen to one another. Listen to understand, rather than listening to respond. Don’t be afraid of expressing yourself. This helps in building trust.

Encourage each other:

Encouraging your partner’s personal growth is equally important. Support your partner’s aspirations and goals. Try to give space to your partner so they can pursue individual interests and maintain a sense of identity within the relationship.

Set boundaries:

Setting boundaries is also one of the essential factors for building a good relationship. It is not only about what you don’t want or like in your relationships, but also about letting the people around you know what you appreciate. Think about, and let others know where your boundaries are, e.g. respecting your time alone.
