Beat the heat: Health Ministry issues heatwave advisory - dos and don'ts for staying safe

As temperatures soar with the onset of summer, several states have already experienced a rapid increase in heat, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue heatwave warnings for various regions. In response to these conditions, the Union Health Ministry has released guidelines aimed at safeguarding individuals amidst escalating temperatures.

Ministry's Meeting and Measures

The Health Ministry recently convened a meeting led by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to address the rising heatwave concerns. The ministry shared insights from the meeting, highlighting key measures discussed to mitigate heat-related illnesses during the forthcoming summer season. Notable attendees included MoS (Health) Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Dr. V K Paul from NITI Aayog, Secretary (Health) Shri Apurva Chandra, and other dignitaries.

Advisory 

In a letter addressed to chief secretaries of all states and union territories, the health secretary urged compliance with the National Action Plan on Heat-Related Illnesses (HRI) to enhance health facility preparedness and manage heat-related cases efficiently. The ministry underscored the need for essential supplies such as medicines, intravenous fluids, ice-packs, ORS, drinking water, and information and education campaigns (IEC) to educate the public.

Updated Heat Action Plans

The Health Ministry revealed that Heat Action Plans have been updated in 23 states, with approximately 100 districts implementing campaigns focused on heatwave awareness. These plans incorporate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for monitoring heatstroke cases and fatalities, along with preparedness strategies for vulnerable populations.

Health Guidelines

The advisory issued by the Ministry of Health outlines "dos and don'ts" to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses. Recommendations include staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, avoiding direct sunlight, and ensuring rapid cooling by immersing feet in cool water. Conversely, individuals are advised against outdoor activities, cooking, and consuming certain beverages during peak heat periods, emphasizing precautions for children, pets, and vulnerable individuals.
