Over the past 20 years, fertility rates over the world have decreased. According to recent studies, infertility is still a common reproductive issue, and its global disease burden has been rising. The scorching heat already poses several challenges for individuals causing innumerable diseases and allergies. Additionally heatwaves can also hurt the quality of semen and male fertility as there exists a relationship between heat and male fertility.

What is the relationship between heat and semen?

Sperm production is considered to be a delicate process that requires a specific temperature range to function optimally. According to one of the research papers, increasing global climate change today, when ambient temperatures are seen exceeding the critical temperatures is resulting in oxidative stress which severely affects gonadal functioning leading to decreased male semen quality. During summers, excessive heat exposure can disrupt the delicate balance affecting its production and quality.

Ways to deal with it

There are certain ways by which this issue can be dealt with. Some of them are:

Staying cool: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can be detrimental to men's semen production. Things like saunas, hot tubs, and body clothing should be avoided especially when the mercury is soaring high. Stay indoors and wear loose garments that can help make you feel relaxed and cool.

Stay hydrated: Drink as much as water possible to avoid dehydration and maintain a normal body temperature.

Opt for proper diet and supplements: A diet rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables must be consumed. Supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Zinc can do wonders if consumed at regular intervals.

Prefer moderate exercising: While exercising can be a boon for your overall body functioning, excessive of physical activity in hot weather can lead to increased scrotal temperature, which would not be good for semen quality.

Avoid smoking and alcohol: While it is universally known that alcoholism and smoking hurt an individual's health, this can be equally harmful to male fertility. Such habits should be avoided at all costs if you wish to maintain a healthy semen quality.

Consult fertility specialist: If a man is concerned about the semen parameters or fertility, they must get in consultation with a doctor for proper guidance and healthcare tips. The doctor might conduct a test to assess the semen quality and provide you with personalized advice and treatment.
