On the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed a peace plan to end the 15-month-long conflict with Russia and requested India’s support because ‘India has impact and respect in the international community.’

Media reported that Zelenskyy was highly courteous of Prime Minister Modi and made no demands on India other than backing his peace proposal, believing that several nations turn to the world’s largest democracy for guidance. However, the Modi government is considering the proposal.

PM Modi returned to Delhi this morning following a three-nation journey that included significant development in bilateral relations with Australia and deeper engagement with Far Pacific nations at the Indo-Pacific Forum meeting. Despite his busy foreign tour, Modi got to work, communicating to BJP leaders and party workers outside the Palam Technical Area early in the morning and flagging the Vande Bharat Express for Dehradun from New Delhi at 11 a.m.

Other important developments during the three-nation tour of PM Modi

During the G-7 leaders meeting, US President Joe Biden inquired PM Modi about the secret to his lengthy tenure in Indian politics. PM Modi was caught aback by Papua New Guinea PM James Marape’s spontaneous gestures during his visit to Papua New Guinea, with the latter exhibiting the highest respect for him. Following vaccine diplomacy and humanitarian relief assistance from New Delhi at a time of need, the Indo-Pacific Forum countries expressed a desire to cooperate further with India.

One of the critical observations made by the international media was the noticeable improvement in relations between India and Australia, as shown by the two prime ministers’ body language, which indicated mutual respect and confidence. After working hard to enhance relations with Canberra since 2014, the two countries broke new ground by agreeing to supply lithium to India for its electric vehicle batteries.

The two heads of state were clearly in line on further strengthening bilateral ties and were on the same page on the Indo-Pacific. “The signing of the migration mobility agreement with Australia demonstrates Canberra’s confidence in the Indian diaspora,” remarked a senior official from India.
