New Delhi: In a stern declaration, China's military has issued a resolute vow to "crush" any attempts promoting Taiwan's independence, just a day before the island's crucial election. Tensions between Beijing and Taiwan, considered by China as part of its territory, have escalated. And with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) expressing constant vigilance and readiness to take decisive measures if situations go haywire.

Military's firm stance

Defence ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang conveyed China's uncompromising position, stating, "The Chinese People’s Liberation Army maintains high vigilance at all times and will take all necessary measures to firmly crush 'Taiwan independence' attempts of all forms." The announcement underscores China's determination to prevent any move towards independence on the self-ruled island.

Accusations against Taiwan's DPP

Zhang specifically accused Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of escalating tensions by procuring arms from the United States. The arms purchase, according to Zhang, is pushing the island "toward the dangerous conditions of war." The relationship between Taiwan and the United States, particularly in terms of military support, has been a longstanding point of contention between Beijing and Taipei.

Scenario before Taiwan's presidential election

As Taiwan, with its vibrant democracy comprising 23 million people, geared up for a significant presidential election, the stakes were high. The strategic importance of the island, renowned for being a major producer of crucial semiconductors, attracted global interest in the electoral outcome of the sialnd-nation. The victor was expected to navigate Taiwan's ties with an increasingly assertive China, setting the tone for the island's future trajectory.

China's persistent military presence, provocations

Beijing has consistently maintained a robust military presence around Taiwan in recent years, with frequent deployments of warplanes and ships in what is termed "grey zone" harassment actions. While falling short of outright provocation, these actions serve as a constant reminder of China's territorial claims over Taiwan.

Flurry of incidents in the run-up to elections

In the weeks preceding the presidential election, Taiwan witnessed the deliberate crossing of Chinese balloons over the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. Authorities in Taipei condemned this act as a form of interference, adding to the heightened tensions in the region.

The unfolding events highlight the delicate balance Taiwan must navigate in preserving its autonomy amidst increasing pressure from China. As the world watches closely, the outcome of Saturday's election will undoubtedly shape the future trajectory of Taiwan's geopolitical landscape.
