The Pakistan Army has issued a strong message that it is going to alter the "rules of the game" now. This was after Pakistan was attacked by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) extremists and Baloch rebels. It is in response to these that the spokesman for the Pakistan Army has signaled that they will now conduct attacks within Afghanistan.
In the meantime, intense shelling went on for a few days along the Durand Line at the Torkham border. Taliban troops targeted and destroyed a number of Pakistani army outposts along the border. Following this escalation, it appears that the Shehbaz government backed by the Pakistan Army has understood the seriousness of the situation. The Pakistani government has now declared that it will initiate talks with the Taliban regarding the threat posed by the TTP.
On Monday, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar revealed negotiations with the Taliban following an important meeting and stated that the question of terrorists' safe havens would be addressed through diplomacy and negotiations with the Taliban. During the meeting, Pakistan's Special Representative for Afghanistan Ambassador Mahmood Sadiq provided an update on his recent visit to Kabul. It is assumed that as the Taliban has not yet agreed to Pakistan's terms concerning TTP, the Islamabad administration is now attempting to convince them.
There has been a growth in tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent months on the issue of TTP militants. Pakistan claims that terrorists who conducted attacks in its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces have taken refuge in Afghanistan. Remarkably, the Pakistan government's statement on negotiating with the Taliban does not include any reference to the TTP or the subject of cross-border terrorism. It is considered a bid to appease the Taliban.
