New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at addressing distractions in classrooms, the British government unveiled new guidelines regarding the use of mobile phones in schools. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the detrimental impact of mobile phones on students' concentration during lessons in a video shared on Monday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's message

The video showcased Sunak being interrupted multiple times by the ringing of his phone while attempting to speak. Reflecting on the experience, Sunak highlighted the disruptive nature of mobile phones in educational settings.

"Almost one-third of secondary school pupils have reported disruptions caused by mobile phones in classrooms," Sunak stated. He underscored that mobile phones not only pose a distraction but also contribute to instances of bullying in schools. Citing the positive outcomes observed in schools that have already implemented bans, Sunak expressed the government's commitment to supporting similar initiatives across the country.

"We're committed to ensuring that our children receive an education free from unnecessary distractions," Sunak affirmed.

Implementation of new guidelines

According to reports from the PTI, the new guidelines will encompass various strategies, including prohibiting phones on school premises, mandating students to hand in their phones upon arrival, and securely storing phones during school hours.

Data from the UK media watchdog, Office of Communications (OFCOM), reveals that by the age of twelve, a staggering 97% of children possess a mobile phone. The Department for Education (DfE) highlighted concerns regarding the negative impact of mobile phone usage on students' learning experiences, citing online bullying and distractions as significant challenges.

Prioritizing children's wellbeing and education

UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan emphasized the importance of prioritizing children's wellbeing and education in today's digital age. Donelan highlighted the government's commitment to fostering a safe online environment through legislative measures aimed at protecting young people.

"Today's announcement will provide invaluable support to parents and educators, ensuring that the next generation can thrive and achieve their full potential," Donelan concluded.
