Why are we even concerned? Trump questions 21 million dollar US aid to India

Donald Trump has claimed that the United States provided $21 million to India during the Lok Sabha elections to increase voter turnout and support a specific candidate's victory. The Indian government has not yet responded to these allegations, stating that they are currently investigating Trump's claims.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again raised concerns over the $21 million aid allocated by USAID to increase voter turnout in India. The funding, which was initially approved under his administration but later revoked, has been a point of contention for Trump.

Trump made these comments during a video conference with American governors, continuing his critique of foreign aid allocations. He also criticized the $29 million granted to Bangladesh to strengthen its political framework, questioning the legitimacy of the firms handling these funds. Referring to the India-related funding, Trump labeled it a "kickback scheme," suggesting financial irregularities or misuse of funds.

Why is US concerned about India’s voter turnout?

Expressing his skepticism, Trump remarked, "Why do we care about voter turnout in India? We have our own election issues." He highlighted the controversy surrounding alleged Russian interference in U.S. elections, pointing out, "Russia reportedly spent just a couple of thousand dollars, and it became a huge scandal. Yet, we’re sending $21 million to India?"

India’s official response

Following Trump’s statements, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded with caution. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "We are reviewing the information released by the U.S. administration regarding certain financial aid and activities. This raises serious concerns for us." Indian officials have maintained a measured stance, indicating that the matter is under review.

Trump’s continued criticism

This marks the third time Trump has publicly attacked the USAID funding to India. Previously, he suggested that such financial aid might have been used to influence elections in favor of certain candidates. However, apart from acknowledging the matter, India has yet to provide a direct response to Trump’s claims.
