Juan Jose Zuniga is a Bolivian general who was arrested following a military coup attempt in Bolivia. Bolivian soldiers on Wednesday took over the capital's central square and forced entry into the presidential palace, sparking fears of a military coup. General Zuniga claimed the action had public support.  Videos surfaced on social media showed General Zuniga entering the Palacio Quemado and confronting Arce face-to-face.

According to recent updates, Bolivian President Luis Arce faced down a coup attempt on Wednesday that saw heavily armed troops fill the main plaza in La Paz and armored vehicle breach the government palace before withdrawing. 

Responding to this President Luis Arce condemned the "irregular mobilisation," while ex-leader Evo Morales accused a top general of plotting a coup. He said, "We will not allow the armed forces to violate democracy and intimidate people!" Reportedly President instructed the general to stand with his troops down. Shortly after soldiers and tanks were pulled back from the square. The unrest lasted for almost five hours. 

Arce said that he would also swear in new military leaders firing Zuniga. The General is now been summoned and dismissed after making disparaging remarks. 

Meanwhile, it is important to note that this is not the first time when Bolivia brushed with coup attempts. The country has had more than 190 coup attempts since its independence in 1825.

Who is General Juan Jose Zuniga?

General Juan Jose Zuniga has been a rebel and a contentious figure in Bolivian politics. He is the adversary of former President Evo Morales, who continues to have considerable influence in the political sphere. Arce, the president now in office, belongs to the same political party as Morales.

Throughout his lengthy military service, he has also been charged with embezzlement. He was accused of stealing close to 2.7 million bolivianos. It is also claimed that Zuniga struggled academically. However, his cognitive abilities helped him advance in the Bolivian armed forces.
