The US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Israeli officials have turned the water supply back for South Gaza in a media interview. Israel had halted the water supply to Gaza after Hamas launched rockets towards Israel in a surprise attack on October 7.

“I have been in touch with my Israeli counterparts just within the last hour who reported to me that they have, in fact, turned the water pipe back on in southern Gaza,” Sullivan said.

The decision to provide water supply in specific locations aligns with Israel’s policy in Gaza, the Israel Energy Minister said, confirming the development, media reports suggest. Moreover, this decision was taken after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden held talks on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Israel’s Energy Minister said.

Water crisis in Gaza

According to media reports, the United Nations shelters in Gaza were running out of water on Sunday. A spokesperson for the UN Palestinian refugee camp told media that Gaza was running dry due to which the UN teams had also begun to ration water to the residents of the war-torn Gaza.

Following the attacks on Israel by Hamas, the country had cut off the sully of essentials such as food, water and medicines to the Gaza Strip and called for a complete blockade of the region. This resulted in a major humanitarian crisis in Gaza after Israel launched retaliatory strikes toward the region killing more than 2300 Palestinians. This order was given on the fourth day of the war with Hamas militants.
