The world ushers in the New Year with Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, as the first place to do so for 2025 at 5 a.m. EST or 3:30 p.m. IST. This quiet Pacific Ocean atoll marks the place from where one by one the rest of the world joins the party.
The Chatham Islands, Auckland, and Wellington main cities saw the dawn of a new year at 6 a.m. EST, or 4:30 p.m. IST, barely 15 minutes past midnight. The sky was lit up by fireworks hoping that the New Year would be auspicious.
The city of Sydney starts the fireworks above the iconic Harbour Bridge, whereas Melbourne and Canberra welcome 2025 with great flamboyance at 7:30 p.m. IST. The excitement is then spread over Queensland and Northern Australia by 8 p.m. IST.
Japan, South Korea, and North Korea usher in the year 2025 at 10 a.m. EST or 8:30 p.m. IST; China, the Philippines, and Singapore waste not a minute. Asia is all aglow with twinkling lights, lanterns, and vibrancy dancing in joy.
India welcomes the new year at midnight IST as a billion voices cheer together. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and then the Pacific islands of Baker and Howland complete the circle of global celebrations as the world welcomes 2025.
