A shocking case has come to light from West Virginia, America. Here a female teacher who had sex with a 17-year-old student has escaped jail despite admitting her heinous crime. During this, the victim's mother asked the humiliated teacher in the court, "How dare you?" In fact, Courtney Rankin, a former teacher of Bridgeport High School in West Virginia, was sentenced on Monday after being found guilty of the charges in October.
According to the complaint, he admitted to having sexual intercourse with the student 10 to 15 times at his apartment after she "began talking to [Rankin] in class," and that this "led to a relationship outside of school." A Marion County Sheriff's Department deputy said the victim told authorities she was sexually abused by Rankin, who "was the victim's teacher at Bridgeport High School." This happened after a former teacher was convicted of having sexual intercourse with five students and fathering a child with one of them.
During this time, the boy said the sexual abuse occurred "10-15 times" at Rankin's Fairmont residence. Speaking with Rankin on May 20, authorities said "he willingly provided the same account of the incidents" and "confirmed the relationship began during this school year." "The victim would come to his apartment and the two would have sexual intercourse," authorities said.
During his sentencing on Monday, Rankin said he accepted responsibility and was remorseful. The court was presented with letters from 14 character witnesses supporting Rankin, including letters from his doctor, mother and former co-workers. Despite the horrific nature of his crimes, Judge Patrick Wilson sentenced Rankin to one to five years of house arrest, with the condition that it be served at his home in Pennsylvania. He will also have to pay a $1,000 fine.
Rankin will be required to perform 20 hours of community service per week during the duration of his sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender for life. He will be subject to 10 years of supervised probation upon his release. A pre-sentence investigation found Rankin was unlikely to reoffend and posed no threat to society. It also took into account his claims of being a victim of domestic violence and suffering from PTSD. The victim's mother made a tearful statement in court and asked for the maximum sentence. She said in court, "How dare you?"
