Amid ongoing diplomatic tensions with New Delhi, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu wrapped up a five-day visit to China by subtly criticising India. In a press conference on Saturday, Mohamed Muizzu said, "We may be small but this doesn't give them the license to bully us."
The statement follows a recent diplomatic spat between India and Maldives triggered by derogatory remarks from Maldivian politicians towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. In response, India summoned the Maldivian envoy and demanded action, leading to the suspension of three Maldivian ministers.
Muizzu's criticism coincided with China's renewed commitment to the Maldives. A joint statement declared, "The two sides agree to continue firmly supporting each other in safeguarding their respective core interests...China firmly supports the Maldives in upholding its national sovereignty, independence, and national dignity, respects and supports the Maldives' exploration of a development path that suits its national conditions, and firmly opposes external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives."

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu appealed to China to "intensify efforts" and send more tourists to the island nation, aiming to reclaim its pre-pandemic position as the Maldives' top tourism market. Twenty agreements were signed across various sectors, solidifying the partnership further.
The joint statement said that the two sides also agreed on the blueprint for Building a China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024-2028) and inked documents on collaboration in areas such as the Belt and Road.
Further, it added, "Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 52 years ago, the two countries have always respected and supported each other."
