New Delhi:ย In a tumultuous demonstration on Saturday night, a group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the White House, chanting slogans and attempting to breach the security fence. The situation escalated as the crowd, expressing their dissatisfaction, shook the fence vigorously, causing a portion of it to come loose.

Security measures and evacuation

The Secret Service swiftly responded to the escalating tension by evacuating non-essential staff from the area. Video footage captured the intensity of the protesters' attempts to breach the fence, prompting Secret Service officers to resist and prevent any unauthorized entry into the White House grounds.

Confrontation, verbal outbursts

Amid the chaos, the protesters engaged in confrontations with the officers, throwing water bottles and flag sticks. Vocalizing their dissent, they shouted, "F**k Joe Biden!" and expressed their opposition to perceived support for actions they deemed objectionable. Verbal outbursts included accusations like "You support the murder of children!"

Limited damage reported

While the protest resulted in some minor damage to the anti-scale fencing outside the White House, the primary fence and nearby structures remained unaffected, according to reports from The New York Post. Lt. Paul Mayhair assured that the Secret Service support teams promptly addressed the issues on-site for safety reasons.

Immediate response, temporary relocation

"U.S. Secret Service support teams quickly fixed the issues on-site," stated Lt. Paul Mayhair. "For safety reasons, we temporarily moved some media and staff members who were close to Pennsylvania Avenue while we dealt with the problem." No arrests were reported at the time of writing this article.

Backdrop of the protest

The protest was the culmination of a march through Washington DC, demanding an end to Israeli violence in Gaza. Thousands of participants voiced their concerns, displaying signs with messages such as "No votes for Genocide Joe," "Biden has blood on his hands," and "Let Gaza live."

Biden's stance, recent actions

Despite the criticism, President Joe Biden has consistently supported Israel, recently authorizing an "emergency sale" of nearly 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition worth $106 million to the country. The protesters highlighted the high number of casualties in Gaza resulting from Israel's counteroffensive against Hamas' surprise attack on Oct. 7.

Gaza conflict, casualty figures

The Health Ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, reported over 23,800 deaths in Gaza, primarily women and children, due to Israel's counteroffensive. The conflict began when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Oct. 7, resulting in about 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and the kidnapping of 250 others. As of now, it's estimated that 132 hostages remain in Hamas' custody.
