While other world leaders traveled to Johannesburg for the three-day BRICS SUMMIT, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to avoid the summit by not traveling to South Africa, instead choosing the virtual route.

The BRICS bloc consists of India, Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa.

Know reason why Putin is skipping BRICS Summit travels

Vladimir Putin will participate at the summit via video call since his travel to South Africa was hampered by an arrest warrant issued for him by the International Criminal Court in March. This summit will be the first in-person gathering since before the Covid-19 outbreak. The kidnapping of children from Ukraine prompted the issuance of the warrant. Vladimir Putin will participate electronically along with giving a speech. Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, will also be attending to represent the nation.

Modi, xi arrive for 15th BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Johannesburg and started the first half of his two-nation visit. The prime minister will be in South Africa from August 22 to 24. He was welcomed heartily as he touched down at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Johannesburg.

South Africa has already welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday to attend the 15th BRICS Summit.

Interaction worth mentioning

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov outlined the key talking points in a recently released interview.

He declared, “I certainly believe that the ideology of Western domination pushed by the United States and its dependent nations does not provide for the peaceful development of all of humanity.

“On the contrary, we must cope with the Western minority’s constant pursuit of military, political, financial, and economic expansion. They adopt a variety of slogans, such as “promote globalization,” “promote Westernization,” “promote Americanization,” “promote universalization,” “promote liberalization,” etc. However, their goal of subjugating every independent player and compelling them to follow Western-friendly regulations remains unchanged.

The US and its allies, according to Lavrov, “are striving to slow down, or even reverse, the normal evolution of international relations and the formation of a multipolar system. They don’t mind employing improper and prohibited techniques, such as the use of force or unilateral sanctions (unapproved by the UN Security Council), information and psychological warfare, etc., to sway the globe in their Favor.
